Fukuoka and Back Pt. 3

My trip to Fukuoka was short but sweet. Compared to Yokohama I rather enjoyed the relative lack of people. Even for the largest city on Kyushu it felt like my little ward in Yokohama had more people than Hakata station. Our main outing while in Kyushu was a visit to Dazaifu temple, which is famous as the shrine to go to when asking god for help and endurance getting into high schools and colleges.

Arriving at Dazaifu station, I think I found all of those missing people in Hakata. Leading up to the temple is a wide pedestrian road with stores lining both sides of the street selling souvenirs.

Seas of People

And then there’s this guy. He stands outside all day praying and accepting donations for his temple.

Monk

Inside the temple grounds it’s a sea of people and rather difficult to get a good photo of the temple. Inside the temple itself there are many people attending a service.

Busted

Before I know it our time in Fukuoka is up and it’s time to leave. I’ll miss Fukuoka. Although it looks identical to Yokohama or the rest of Japan, there’s something different about it. Something more relaxed.
